A S SIR HENRY TIZARD SAT DOWN TO DINNER with Vannevar Bush on the evening of August 28 in the civilized surroundings of the Cosmos Club, across the Atlantic Eddie Bowen was fast asleep in the Cumberland Hotel near London's Marble Arch. Beneath his bed was a case containing Britain's wartime secrets. Just two things had been held back—the precise details of the very latest developments in jet propulsion and information about some German magnetic mines that had recently been recovered. Nestling in among the plans and manuals was cavity magnetron No. 12. A prior arrangement had been made for the case to be kept overnight in the manager's safe. But when Bowen had checked in the previous evening. the case had turned out to be too big, and with an early start for the boat train to Liverpool, Bowen decided the safest place for it was under his bed.

In the preceding few days the task of assembling everything the six members of the mission would take with them had been completed, and now the moment had come for them to make their separate ways to Liverpool to rendezvous for their passage across the Atlantic. To Bowen had fallen the responsibility of ensuring the safe delivery of the most concentrated collection of wartime secrets that Britain had ever known. Bowen's journey to Euston station the following morning was almost as mundane as his trip on the London Underground with the cavity magnetron a couple of weeks earlier, as he recalled:
